| Approval has been given to outline plans for an indoor Snow and Leisure centre at in Middlesbrough near the Riverside Stadium, home of the town’s Premier League football team. |
Cool Runnings (NE) is behind the scheme which could create up to 300 jobs. It would include two ski slopes, an ice-climbing wall, soft play area, trampolines, retail and restaurant space. Extras include facilities for sledging, tubing, an ice bar, indoor sky dive centre and climbing walls.
The multi-million-pound investment in the facility is expected to be completed by late 2017 or early 2018. An outline application for the development was submitted to the authority in July last year by Teesside-based Cool Runnings.
A demand study undertaken to assess the potential of the project has estimated a projected footfall of 2.25m visitors every year. The nearest snow centres to Middlesbrough are some distance away in Wakefield and Glasgow.
The application that was considered by Middlesbrough Council stated that the nature of the development means the resulting building would be “relatively large and very visible”. However, it adds that given its location, this would be “entirely appropriate”.
Rachael Howson, of Cool Runnings (NE) Ltd, said she was delighted that the scheme had moved closer to completion.
Speaking after the meeting, she said: “We are absolutely delighted that the application was so well received by the committee. We have put a lot of hard work into this scheme and it is really starting to take shape.
“We have had a lot of interest in it and we should be back with the finer details in about six months time. Once it is open we expect to be able to attract people from across the region.”
