Wakemans hands over £1.5 million Walsall Waterfront scheme

Construction work has been completed on a £1.5 million development that will provide four new restaurants on Walsall’s Waterfront.

New tenants are now fitting out the shells with Creams and Subway both set to open later this month.

Developer Kier Property and Walsall Council bosses confirmed in August that they would be joined by Five Guys and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

They will be next to Pizza Express, Chiquito’s, Green King, Bella Italia, TGI Fridays and The Light Cinema.

Property consultancy Wakemans says it has completed work on phase two of the Walsall Waterfront development, to house the four new restaurants at the £65 million pound mixed leisure complex.

Wakemans acted as project manager, employer’s agent, quantity surveyor and principal designer on behalf of developer Kier Property and confirmed that the shell buildings had been handed over and are being fitted out by the new tenants.

Wakemans director Seinde Balogun said: “Kier Property has successfully regenerated a 17-acre site that enhances Walsall town centre by providing a host of quality leisure facilities, which will not only benefit the local community but will also help to attract visitors and promote inward business investment.”

With a contract value of £1.5 million, phase two of the Walsall Waterfront development is made up of four units – one block of three units comprising 571.2 sq m (6,150 sq ft) of space and a further separate unit of 325.2 sq m (3,500 sq ft).

Wakemans also took a lead role in phase one of the redevelopment project, a mixed leisure scheme that has provided the town centre with a multi-screen cinema, shops, restaurants and bars.

Speaking about the new restaurants earlier this summer, Walsall Council’s deputy leader Lee Jeavons said: “We are delighted that four major food outlets have chosen to invest in Walsall town centre. These restaurants will make a fantastic addition to the Waterfront – creating jobs and offering further choice in the town centre for our shoppers and visitors.

“I hope this will attract more people to visit our popular Waterfront development and encourage more businesses to invest in Walsall.”

Tom Gilman, Kier Property’s managing director (North) said: “We’re sure the strength of these brands will mirror the success of the phase one and ensure the Waterfront scheme is the number one leisure destination in Walsall.”

Stuart Buckley, senior specialist at the Homes and Communities Agency said: “This development means that Walsall Waterfront is the key leisure destination in the borough and the new businesses will add to the leisure offer in the town and importantly provide new jobs.

“It will also support home building in the borough by providing quality leisure facilities for local residents.”
