Imax Sued By Cinemark After Patent Questions

Imax Corp. (IMAX) says it was sued by Cinemark Holdings Inc. (CNK) after the giant-screen cinema company initiated a discussion about a potential violation of theater-geometry patents by Cinemark.

Richard Gelfond, chief executive of Imax, told Dow Jones that his company’s technology people visited multiple locations of Cinemark’s new Extreme Digial Cinema, or “XD” theater format – a big-screen theater concept that Cinemark is rolling out – and discovered that the way the auditoriums had been retrofitted may have violated a couple of Imax’s patents.
