Property developers are being offered the chance to transform a former PSNI station in Co Antrim.
Offers of interest for the Antrim and Newtownabbey Council-owned site in Glengormley are being sought from developers who “have the potential to make a direct and positive contribution to the economic and physical regeneration of the area including job creation” during and after development.
The station, on Glenwell Road, was closed to the public in 2012 and sold to the council in 2014, when it had been on the market for £135,000.
Back then the council had plans to include the site in a multi-million pound leisure regeneration scheme.
But a lack of support from residents and the business community meant the plans did not progress, according to Paul Kelly, assistant director of development at the council.
Mr Kelly said the council has received five enquiries so far for the redevelopment of the station.
“We are putting the feelers out and we are not ruling anything out,” he said.
Mr Kelly added that the council bought the Glenwell station to “make sure it was developed appropriately”.
The 20,344 sq ft site is the second PSNI station in the greater Belfast area to be opened to development this year. Last month it was revealed that the new owner of the former Ballynafeigh police station on the Ormeau Road in south Belfast was property tycoon Padraig Drayne.
It is believed that Mr Drayne bought the station in December 2016 amid reports it might become a retail unit.
However, the Belfast Telegraph understands the property – which was on the market for £900,000 – was snapped up by Mr Drayne with a view to building retail and residential units.
The sale of the station was handled by Belfast-based Dougan Residential and Commercial.
Last year the PSNI revealed it was selling a further 12 stations.
