Wonder Woman 1984 took a second-weekend dive closer to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad than Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Maybe theaters and HBO Max can’t co-exist after all.
Wonder Woman 1984 earned $5.5 million in domestic theaters this weekend, dropping a sharp (and almost unprecedented for a Christmas release, save for Justin Bieber’s Believe in 2013) 67% in its second Fri-Sun frame. That’s a drop closer to Man of Steel (-68%), Batman v Superman (-69%) and Suicide Squad (-67%) than the over/under 43% drops for Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Those first three DC Films flicks opened between $128 million and $166 million, not $16.7 million. WW84 has earned $28.5 million in ten days, with the sharp drop likely ending any hope of getting past the $58 million domestic cume of Tenet. It’ll pass The Croods: A New Age ($34 million domestic) to be the second-biggest “post-pandemic” Hollywood flick thus far, but only by default.
Yes, it would appear that the “release the movie on HBO Max concurrently with theaters” had its expected result. The film overperformed last weekend in theaters, scoring the biggest post-pandemic weekend thus far. However, those who wanted to see it in theaters (presuming they lived near open theaters) did so over the first three days….
