Empire Cinema in Sutton Coldfield will re-open with ‘significant’ upgrades – but no car park
A cinema in Sutton Coldfield which has remained shut for two years will reopen the MP for the town has confirmed. The Empire Cinema at Maney Corner in the town centre closed its doors during the second Covid lockdown in November 2020 and they have never reopened.
Since then the cinema revealed plans to sell off its car park to retirement home developers, McCarthy & Stone, which was given the go-ahead by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee in September. The deal included a £200,000 payment from the developers to help with upgrading the cinema.
But concerns had been raised about the viability of the cinema without a car park. And whether Empire Cinema would carry out its plans to upgrade the Grade II listed Art Deco building and install sofa seating to turn the site into a more luxury venue.
But now Andrew Mitchell MP has said he has spoken to Empire Cinema chief Justin Ribbons who has confirmed the cinema will open ‘early in the new year’.
