I traveled to Seoul late last year to better understand how South Korea has become one of the entertainment capitals of the world. While people are familiar with Korean pop because of BTS and Korean TV thanks to Squid Game, the country’s cultural impact is far greater than a boy band or a hit show.
By some measures, South Korea is now the single largest producer of popular TV outside of the US. I wrote about the multi-decade effort that made this happen this past week.
While in Seoul I also spent some time with Sohee Kim, who just joined our team as Bloomberg’s first media and entertainment correspondent in Asia. She has already written quite a bit about K-pop and will now also be writing about entertainment across India, China, Japan and beyond.
